Newsboys - God's Not Dead (2011)

Newsboys have something they want to tell the world: God's not dead!
That's the title they've chosen for their latest album, released this week.
This time, front man Michael Tait and band mates Jeff Frankenstein (keys), Duncan Phillips (drums), and Jody Davis (guitars) put their Newsboys touch to some of the most popular modern worship anthems.
They include opening track “God’s Not Dead (Like A Lion)”, along with “Forever Reign” and “Revelation Song”.
But don't worry if you were hoping for something new. Five original tracks complete this project that's undoubtedly about so much more than a catchy sound.
Friedrich Nieztsche may have once proclaimed that "God is dead", but the Newsboys clearly beg to differ, and that's the message at the heart of this project.
As Newsboys’ friend and pastor Rice Broocks likes to say, “A funny thing happened on the way to the funeral.”
The belief that God is indeed alive is the truth Newsboys are amplifying.
“God’s not dead, let’s worship Him,” says Tait. “We serve a living God!”

Hillsong - Born Is The King

Hillsong has released their third Christmas worship album composed of Christmas songs led by the Hillsong Church in the middle of November. Above is the official music video of 'Born is the King' from Hillsong - Born is the King (2011) Christmas EP album. This EP contains 8 tracks of classic Christmas songs arranged by Hillsong including two self-written songs 'Born is the King' and 'Emmanuel'.

One of the most common sayings we hear frequently in film production is “Never work with children or animals.”
For most of the productions we've been a part of that would be heavily considered, but this latest project from our Hillsong Creative team is the biggest exception. Take a look...The project’s Creative Director Salomon Ligthelm writes below of his experience in carving out this fun Christmas video with the team.

Ben Field
(Hillsong Television Department Head)

Here, in the southern hemisphere, Christmas looks completely different to what it does in the rest of the world. It is neither cold, nor white, but it is true to everything it should be true to – gifts, family, friends and ultimately a celebration of the birth of Jesus.
When we approached the music video for the song ‘Born is the King (It’s Christmas)’, we thought about what Christmas had to be celebrated for – not for the cold, white stereotypical images that we are so accustomed to, but because we can enjoy the birth of our Savior with friends and family – (in a forest!)
This project was fun from the outset. A bunch of us on the creative team sat down to come up with a fun/easy concept that would communicate the heart of Christmas in a short format film. Our simple concept quickly turned a bit tricky as we started thinking through props and wardrobe and locations, and on top of that, we were going to have to deal with over 20 children for more than a few hours on a hot day.
The initial idea was to have Matt Crocker act as the ‘Pied Piper’ – leading a whole entourage of kids to a massive present, obviously the idea went through a few revisions as we felt like the BAND vs KIDS dynamic could be more interesting.
The process of getting this film off the ground is outlined below:
PRE-PRODUCTION:
1. We came up with the concept about 3 weeks before shoot dates
- We gathered a team of volunteers who could help both creatively and administratively.
- Creative teams consisted of musicians, producers, and cinematographers
- Administrative teams consisted of production coordinators, talent supervisors (parents)
2. We also gathered people who could source props, build the present box, find wardrobe elements, etc
3. Storyboards were created with Penultimate, and paced out against the length/dynamic of the track [see a few storyboards below]

4. Approximately seven locations were scouted before we decided on the location seen in the film.
- Location scouting is often one of the most difficult things in the pre-production process. Finding the location that has the right ‘look’ is one thing, finding the location that has the right ‘look’, facilities and price-tag is another.
- After scouting around and coming up with half-decent options, someone made mention of this forest that had been used in other church projects before. We looked at the footage and decided to go check it out for ourselves. We immediately felt a right about it (it was land owned by a couple who attends our church - making it all the easier).
PRODUCTION:
1. We shot on three different cameras with a variety of different lenses.
Here are some of the technical details:
- Cameras used: 3 Canon 7D’s and 1 Canon 60D
- Lenses used: 1x Sigma 30mm F1.4, 2x Canon 70-200mm F2.8, 1x Canon 16-35mm F2.8
- Camera Rigs: 2x Zacuto shooters, 1x Glidecam HD1000
2. We shot the initial sequences in 23.976fps and the running and fun-fight sequences in 59.976 fps (converted to 23.976 in post for slow-motion effect)
3. The shoot took 5 hours before we lost the sun, but we were surprised what we were able to capture in that time and avoided a second filming day. To work swiftly, we had many hands on set that helped with video card transfers to hard-drives, overseers of kids costumes, builders who put the present box together, assistant-director who organized logistics and schedules on set, production coordinators and mums who helped facilitate productivity between shoots, making sure the kids get moments of rest, time to eat etc. The right crew is so important.
POST-PRODCUTION:
1. This was one of the most rewarding processes of making this piece. We had two people work on the edit and it was very rewarding seeing even a draft cut. The kids were phenomenal – even from that first edit, it was evident that we had captured such a fun and exciting moment in the lives of these kids. The present box was only opened once - you can imagine our excitement as we looked back at the footage for the first time – seeing the kids’ expressions as the box fell open. We spent about three days working through a draft cut and then another two days finessing that cut into what it is today.
2. Color grading was done using Magic Bullet and After Effects. We went for a slightly vintage/analog look, Magic Bullet Looks’ Lift/Gamma/Gain control for warming the highlights, we used Hue/Saturation and Luminance controls to define color ranges and saturate colors, Curves for contrast and raised blacks, a High-Pass filter for a slight analog feel
This entire film was shot on a very minimal budget for props; the strength and talent of a handful of staff and volunteers made it happen.
I hope you enjoyed it!
- Salomon Ligthelm
(Hillsong Television Team)

Brennan Fortier is one our very talented third year Hillsong College Students that through his internship took the bulk of the pre-production under his belt, and with a small team. I asked him to share some of his experience...

I guess for me the whole project started in the dreaming stage. We were trying to figure out the way to best communicate a mash up of Christmas, crazy-fun, hipster, organic, etc. into a cost efficient music video. We went through a couple of ideas before settling on the treasure hunt styled story. I was so pumped about how it turned out in the end.
It definitely took a lot of learning and growing to reach the end product though. The whole process of organizing the video was exactly that, a process. Being responsible for the location and the actors was a challenge for me as I’m really new to the whole world of film, but I had a lot of help from everyone else on the team. One day we would be out running through the woods hoping to stumble on some Christmas trees, and the next we’d be looking for the best type of hazer to fill a giant red box with smoke, so everyday was a lot of fun.
I think the hardest thing for me was getting that giant red present built and working. Even on the day of the shoot we had to make many last second (literally) adjustments to make sure that it fell like we wanted. I knew it would be a challenge when we built it for the first time in my backyard, and it was half the size of my garage, but we powered through to the finish.
As we counted down the final days to the shoot, everything began to get a bit hectic. Even after finally settling on a location we still had a constant battle with the weather. Somehow though, everything just fell into place as we started early that Wednesday morning. You could feel how ecstatic everyone was to finally shoot this thing and all the actors looked amazing.
Overall, it was just an absolutely incredible project to be a part of. Not only was it a treasure hunt in the video, but also the kids literally hunted for the prized box the whole day, with the present scene being the last one we filmed. That scene not only looked fun on camera, but honestly just turned into a massive party with everyone laughing and running around. That is one day that I will never forget.

Hillsong LIVE - God Is Able

God Is Able is the twentieth album in the live praise and worship series of Christian Contemporary music by Hillsong Church. It was recorded at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in Australia by Reuben Morgan, Darlene Zschech and the Hillsong Worship Team on 7 November 2010. Most of the songs were written by Reuben Morgan, Ben Fielding and Dylan Thomas. Other songwriters include Darlene Zschech, Joel Houston, Harrison Wood, Jill McCloghry, Sam Knock, Joel Davies, Jason Ingram and Chris Tomlin. A collection of fresh sounds and inspiring new congregational anthems is the stage for God Is Able, an offering of worship, a night of passionate praise recorded by the Hillsong team in the hopes that it would
bless the Body of Christ.

It might be short and simple, but the title of the latest Hillsong LIVE album is packed with God-inspired wisdom and Kingdom-shaped truth. In every season, in every situation, being reminded that God Is Able can help keep hearts on fire and lives on track. How do I know this? Because that's precisely what I’ve experienced for myself.
But this is not going to be a testimony piece. My life has been no harder, no more dramatic than anyone else’s. Yes, there have been times of great rejoicing, times of suffering, tears of happiness and tears of sorrow, and some of you will have known greater grace, more dramatic rescues or harder journeys home to our Father.
The lessons and experiences that I want to share are the ones that are woven in and out of the songs on God Is Able. These songs are packed with meaning, each one slightly different, but together they unite to form something far louder and larger. Together they are stronger.
The title song was written last year with a specific weekend in mind. We were approaching our annual event where we gather as a church and make a deliberate choice to give money in support of a unique mission - often overseas, always doing something to overcome injustice and build the Kingdom here on earth. It’s a great time and I’m always amazed and encouraged by the passion and commitment which people put into it. Many will put aside extra money all year so that they can lend their support. So, knowing this was coming up, I wanted to write a song that reminded us of God’s amazing ability to use our generosity in powerful ways. When it comes to the matter of giving, generous hands will never be empty because - as we are reminded in Ephesians 3 - God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.
So I suppose I should have seen it coming. I thought the song would inspire people a little, encourage them in their giving and maybe lead some to think about the ways in which God could transform others through their kindness. I had no idea that the three simple words - God is able - would become so important to us, but they did. As Australia was shocked by floods and cyclones, as we watched our neighbours deal with earthquakes and saw friends from further away go through the horrors of further earthquakes, tsunami and nuclear crisis, those three little words became our anchor in the storm. Troubles come, but God is Able. Sorrow rips at the soul, but God is Able. Hope appears lost, but God is still - always and forever - Able.
What started out as a song of celebration ended up sustaining us through our desperation. Isn’t that a great illustration of the power of praise? What happens when our hands are lifted high can often end up helping us when our heads hang low.
So many of the songs on the album are linked by this theme of overcoming - from “Rise” to “The Lost Are Found,” “With Us” to “You Are More” - and yet it is not an album of laments. This sort of paradox is typical of worship, and it seems to me that there is always something upside down about singing songs to God. I suppose it’s even there in the titles: we start with “Rise” and come towards the end with “The Cry of the Broken.” Normally it’s the brokenness that precedes the standing up, but in God’s order everything is different: when we rise up and sing it, there should never be too long before we’re aware of the world beyond the walls and our call to be among the people whose journey back to God is still in motion.
The other day I heard someone say that some people meet Jesus on the road to Damascus, but for others, their conversion is more like the road to Emmaus: a gradual realization that Jesus is with them, alongside them, igniting their hearts and opening their eyes. It struck me that this is another good thing to remember - not just when we are praying for our friends and family who do not yet know God for themselves, but for those of us within the church as well. Sometimes God acts with such power we are left stunned and silent, but at other times, He works quietly, almost imperceptibly, gently warming our hearts to Him. Remembering this makes me even more amazed at the power of those three little words that sit on the cover of the album: God is able to work in ways that we can never hope to predict.
One last thing. If you take a look at the album cover you will see some pretty fancy, handmade art. It took a long time and a lot of patience to create the piece, and again it’s a beautiful illustration of church. Thread is such a fragile thing, and only when it is combined with other strands can it really begin to stand out. Isn’t that just like the local church? None of us are strong enough on our own, but together we are stronger. And there’s one essential ingredient we must never forget: it is only when these threads are taken in the hands of the artist and transformed over time that they become something that is truly beautiful and beautifully true.

Jesus Culture - Everything

Jesus Culture Band began as the local youth group worship team led by Banning Liebscher when he was youth pastor at Bethel Church. During this time they began leading worship at Jesus Culture conferences both nationally and internationally and thus the Jesus Culture band was formed.

Jesus Culture began in the summer of 1999, when the youth group at Bethel Church in Redding, California, led by Banning Liebscher, launched the first Jesus Culture conference. The ministry has been called "one of the most significant Christian movements in post-war America".Their albums are a mix of original and cover songs.
According to Jesus Culture's website, "The heart of these gatherings was to serve other churches and lead young people to experience the radical love of God. At each conference there was a strong presence of the Lord, and the youth and young adults were going back to their homes, schools, work places and churches, completely impassioned and transformed...It soon became very clear to us that worship was to be a significant part of our movement. Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, and Melissa How were worship leaders at our local youth group, and the Lord began to use them to bring an entire generation into whole-hearted worship."
